Payroll for UK businesses
In plain English

What is a Payroll service?

Payroll covers everything involved in paying your team: calculating gross to net pay, deducting tax and National Insurance, applying pension contributions and reporting it all to HMRC in real time.

It also covers the events around it — new starters, leavers, sick pay, maternity pay, student loans, and year-end reporting.

We run it for you on an agreed cycle so employees are paid the right amount on the right day, and your HMRC position stays clean.

We check tax codes, pension status and anything unusual.

03

Calculations are run and a draft summary prepared.

04

You approve the run

You confirm the figures before payslips are issued.

05

We submit to HMRC

RTI is filed and pension contributions are uploaded.

06

We confirm what happens next

You receive payslips, the payment schedule and PAYE due.

Important deadlines

Key Payroll Deadlines

Pay employees
Submit FPS on or before payday
Pay HMRC by the relevant PAYE/NIC deadline

FPS

On or before payday

A Full Payment Submission (FPS) must normally be sent to HMRC on or before the date employees are paid.

PAYE & National Insurance

22nd (electronic) · 19th (post)

PAYE tax and National Insurance collected through payroll are normally due to HMRC by the 22nd of the following month when paying electronically, or the 19th when paying by post. Where an employer qualifies to pay HMRC quarterly, different payment timings apply.

Tax year end

5 April

The UK tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April, and year-end payroll reporting follows from that date.

P60

By 31 May

Employees who are still employed by the business on 5 April must normally receive their P60 by 31 May.

P11D

By 6 July

Where applicable, forms P11D for taxable benefits and expenses must normally be submitted to HMRC and provided to employees by 6 July following the end of the tax year. Where benefits are formally payrolled, the reporting requirements differ, so not every employer needs a P11D for every benefit.

Class 1A National Insurance

22 July (electronic) · 19 July (post)

Class 1A National Insurance due on relevant taxable benefits is normally payable by 22 July when paying electronically, or 19 July when paying by post.

Deadlines and thresholds are set by HMRC and Companies House and can change. We confirm the exact dates and amounts that apply to you in writing.
