VAT Returns for UK businesses
In plain English

What are VAT Returns?

VAT is a tax charged on most goods and services. Once registered, you charge VAT on qualifying sales, reclaim VAT on qualifying costs, and report the difference to HMRC — usually every quarter.

The detail is where it gets awkward: which scheme suits you, how to treat overseas sales, reverse charge rules in construction, partially exempt income, and what evidence you need to reclaim.

We handle registration, choose a scheme that fits, prepare each return from your records and submit it under Making Tax Digital.

Important deadlines

Key VAT Deadlines

VAT period ends
1 month + 7 days
VAT Return and payment due

VAT Return

1 month + 7 days

For businesses using standard quarterly VAT periods, the VAT Return is normally due 1 calendar month and 7 days after the end of the VAT accounting period.

VAT payment

1 month + 7 days

Any VAT owed to HMRC is normally due by the same deadline as the VAT Return — 1 calendar month and 7 days after the end of the VAT period.

Your exact dates

The exact deadline depends on your VAT accounting period, and different arrangements can apply under certain VAT schemes, such as annual accounting or payments on account. Your HMRC VAT account shows your specific filing and payment dates, and we confirm them with you.

Digital records

Making Tax Digital requires records to be kept digitally with a digital link through to the return.

Registration

Registration is required once turnover crosses HMRC's threshold on a rolling basis, so we monitor it with you.

Example: a standard quarter

  • 31 MarchVAT quarter ends
  • 7 MayVAT Return and payment deadline

Deadlines vary with your VAT accounting period and scheme — always check your HMRC VAT account for your specific dates.

Deadlines and thresholds are set by HMRC and Companies House and can change. We confirm the exact dates and amounts that apply to you in writing.
