Accounting for doctors, locums and medical professionals.
Income from more than one source is normal in medicine. We bring it together into one accurate tax position and keep the reporting straightforward.
- Locum and private income handled
- Records kept simple
- Chartered, personal service

Where the complexity usually sits
Income from several sources
Employment, locum work, private practice and occasional teaching or reporting income can all arrive in the same tax year.
Irregular locum work
Varying placements and rates make it harder to know what profit looks like until the year has finished.
Record keeping around shifts
Remittance advices, invoices and expenses are easy to lose track of when the clinical work comes first.
Knowing what is allowable
Professional subscriptions, indemnity cover, examination and training costs and travel each have their own treatment.
Deciding on a company
Some medical professionals trade through a limited company; for others it adds cost without benefit. It depends on the circumstances.
Working across multiple trusts and agencies
Different payers, different paperwork and different rates make it harder to keep one clear picture of the year.

How the year usually runs
Capture income and costs
Remittances, invoices and expenses are recorded through the year rather than reconstructed later.
Review the structure
We check whether sole trader or limited company remains the right fit for your work pattern.
Prepare the figures
Accounts for locum and private income are prepared after the tax year ends.
File and confirm the tax
The return is submitted once approved and you get the amounts and payment dates.
Plan for the next year
We agree what to set aside and any changes worth making.
Questions we are asked most.
If your question is not here, ask us directly — an initial conversation costs nothing.
Ask a questionI am employed but also do locum work — do I need a tax return?
Usually yes. Income outside PAYE generally needs to be reported through Self Assessment, and we combine it with your employment income.
Should I work through a limited company?
Sometimes, but not always. It depends on the level and type of income, your other work and your plans. We review your circumstances before recommending anything.
What expenses can I claim?
It depends on the nature of the income and how the cost was incurred. Professional subscriptions, indemnity cover and some training and travel costs are common; we review each properly.
How much of my time will this take?
Very little. We collect information digitally and ask focused questions rather than sending long generic checklists.
